Early Life and Titles
Landulf VII was the second son of Landulf III (or V), the co-prince of Benevento and Capua. After Landulf III's death, his co-ruler, Pandulf Ironhead, removed his nephews from power. When Pandulf Ironhead died, Landulf III's older son, Pandulf II, easily seized the Principality of Benevento from his cousin, Landulf VI of Capua, ending the union between the two principalities. The future Landulf VII received only the county of Sant'Agata.
Ascension to the Throne
In 999, Emperor Otto III deposed the Capuan prince Laidulf, the last of Pandulf Ironhead's sons. In March 1000, he appointed Ademar, who was not a member of the ruling dynasty, as prince. However, by July 1000, the people of Capua expelled Ademar and called upon Landulf VII to take the throne.
Reign
Landulf VII's accession ended two decades of turmoil over the Capuan throne. His reign was notable for its stability and prosperity. In 1007, Landulf VII was succeeded by his young son, Pandulf II, who was under the regency of Pandulf (II of Benevento, III of Capua).
