Diana Holum: Olympic Champion and Trailblazing Coach

Diana Holum is an American speed skater who achieved remarkable success on the international stage. She is best known for her gold medal victory in the 1,500m event at the 1972 Winter Olympics, becoming the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in speed skating.

Early Life and Career

Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Holum first stepped onto the ice at the age of 10. Initially pursuing figure skating, she later discovered her passion for speed skating after relocating to Northbrook. At age 15, she joined the national team and made her Olympic debut at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, where she won a silver medal in the 500m and a bronze medal in the 1,000m.

Olympic Glory at Sapporo

At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Holum surprised many by choosing to race the 1,500m distance. Considered an underdog, she defied expectations by winning the gold medal with a time of 2:19.85 seconds. She also earned a silver medal in the 3,000m event.

World Championship Success and Coaching Career

In 1972, Holum became the first American to win the World Sprint Speed Skating Championships. After retiring from competitive skating in 1973, she transitioned to coaching, leading the U.S. national speed skating team. She made history as the first female coach of the U.S. women's speed skating team at the 1976 Winter Olympics.

Impactful Coaching Legacy

Over 25 years as the head coach of the American speed skating team, Holum made a significant impact on the sport. She coached legendary speed skater Eric Heiden, who won five Olympic gold medals at the 1980 Winter Olympics, and also trained her daughter, Christina.

Post-Coaching Career and Personal Life

In addition to coaching, Holum taught physical education at secondary schools in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Currently, she resides in Denver, Colorado.
