Early Life and Rollerblading Career
Growing up, the future American speed skater embarked on her athletic journey through rollerblading in 1998. Her aspirations eventually led her to transition from rollerblades to ice skates in pursuit of Olympic glory.
Climbing the Ranks in Ice Skating
In 2008, at the age of 18, the skater made her debut at the World Sprint Championships, finishing 25th. Her success progressed with her championship title at the 2009 US Sprint Championships. The year 2010 marked her Olympic debut in Vancouver, where she competed in three events: 500m (6th), 1000m (9th), and 1500m (16th).
International Breakthrough
The skater's international breakthrough came at the 2011 World Single Distances Championships, where she secured a bronze medal in the 1000m. That same season (2010/2011), she triumphed in the World Cup's 1000m event by emerging victorious in both races at the Obihiro stage.
World Championship Glory
During the 2012/2013 season, the skater's dominance soared as she won multiple World Cup stages in the 1000m distance. Her crowning achievement came at the World Sprint Championships, where she shattered the world record in the sprint all-around and became the world champion in the sprint event. Moreover, she claimed the World Cup title in the 1000m discipline.
Personal Life
The skater currently resides in Salt Lake City, where she trains with her team at the Utah Olympic Oval. She is married to Dutch speed skater Jorrit Bergsma.
