Italian Cardinal

Early Career

Born in Italy, the cardinal served as the titular Bishop of Lari Castellum from 1971 to 1974. During this period, he held the additional roles of auxiliary Bishop of Matera and apostolic administrator of the vacant see of Gravina and Irsina.

Archbishop of Matera and Irsina

In 1974, he was appointed Archbishop of Matera and Irsina, a position he held until 1987. During his tenure in this diocese, he oversaw the spiritual welfare of the faithful and led the local Catholic community.

Archbishop of Naples

In 1987, the cardinal was elevated to the prestigious position of Archbishop of Naples, one of the most important dioceses in Italy. As Archbishop of Naples, he assumed responsibility for the largest archdiocese in Europe, comprising over 6,000 churches and serving a population of millions.

Cardinal

In 1988, the cardinal was created a Cardinal-Priest, a high honor bestowed by the Pope. He was assigned the titular church of S. Gioacchino ai Prati di Castello in Rome.

Retirement
