Biography of Derek de Lint

Derek de Lint is an actor known for his work in independent cinema. He has a passion for working in independent films, whether in Europe or North America, as he believes that the actors and crew involved in these projects are truly dedicated to their craft.

Early Life and Education
Derek studied photography and graphic design at Kunstacademie in Enschede from 1970 to 1972. He then attended Kleinkunstacademie in Amsterdam for the next two years, where he honed his skills in ballet, jazz, and Spanish dance. This discipline helped him in his later career in film.

Early Career and Breakthrough
In 1975, Derek made his stage debut in the play "Thuis" directed by Hugo Claus, a renowned Belgian director and screenwriter. This opportunity came about when his Spanish dance teacher, Marina Westra, introduced him to Claus, who was in search of a lead actor for his play. Derek impressed Claus and was cast as Rik Vandele. He continued to gain recognition with his role as Brad Majors in the production of "The Rocky Horror Show". This caught the attention of director Paul Verhoeven, who later offered him a leading role in the film "Soldier of Orange". Though Derek had mixed experiences working with Verhoeven, the film became one of the most expensive Dutch films at the time.

International Success and Career Challenges
Derek achieved international success with two films in the 1980s, "Bastille" and "The Assault", both considered among the best films made in the Netherlands during that period. "The Assault" even won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Despite his success, Derek found it challenging to secure roles in his home country, possibly due to his involvement in international projects. However, he continued to act in both Dutch and international films and television series throughout the years.

Later Career and Current Projects
Derek currently resides in Vancouver, Canada, where he has been involved in various film projects. He starred in the television series "Poltergeist: The Legacy" for four seasons, and his role as Dr. Derek Rayne gained him recognition. He also appeared in other international productions such as "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and "Mascara". Recently, he has focused on independent films, including the trilogy "1,2,3, Talk to Me", where he also served as a producer.

Derek continues to work in the film industry, both in Canada and the United States. He occasionally returns to the Netherlands for projects such as the thriller film "Soul Assassin" and the television series "Mevrouw de Minister". His dedication to his craft and desire to work in independent cinema remain strong, and he hopes to continue attracting audiences to his diverse range of projects.
