Dick van Dijk: Legendary Dutch Striker
Early Life and CareerBorn in Gouda, Netherlands, Dick van Dijk began his football journey with local youth club ONA. At age 16, he joined SVV's academy under coach Hans Kroon. Despite showcasing his prowess as a striker in the second Dutch division, SVV's high asking price of 200,000 guilders deterred potential suitors.
Rise to Stardom at FC Twente
In 1967, FC Twente acquired van Dijk for a reduced fee of 70,000 guilders. In his debut season, he netted an impressive 22 goals in 33 matches. The following year, he became the league's highest scorer with 30 goals, sharing the title with Ove Kindvall.
Triumphs with Ajax Amsterdam
Van Dijk's remarkable performance against Ajax in 1968 prompted the Amsterdam club to sign him for 750,000 guilders. He helped Ajax secure the Dutch league title in his first season, contributing 23 goals in 32 matches.
International Recognition
Van Dijk made his debut for the Netherlands national team in 1969, scoring in a 4-0 win over Luxembourg. He played seven matches for his country, finding the net twice.
European Glory with Ajax
In 1971, van Dijk played a crucial role in Ajax's UEFA Champions League triumph. He scored one of the goals in their 2-0 victory over Panathinaikos in the final at Wembley Stadium.
Later Career and Retirement
After leaving Ajax in 1972, van Dijk joined French club OGC Nice. He helped them to a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and was the league's fourth-highest scorer in 1972-1973. Following brief stints with Murcia in Spain and a return to OGC Nice, van Dijk retired from football in 1975.
Tragic Demise
Dick van Dijk passed away suddenly on 8 July 1997, at the age of 51. An autopsy revealed a bacterial infection of his heart valves. He was buried in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France.
Legacy and Remembrance
In van Dijk's memory, a football match between his former youth club ONA and AFC Ajax was held in 1997. A fundraising event was organized in 2007 to build a new mausoleum for his grave. He is survived by his daughter and son, Dick van Dijk Jr.
