Didier Ilunga-Mbenga, also known as DJ Mbenga, is a Belgian professional basketball player currently playing for the Los Angeles Lakers and the Belgian national basketball team. He was born on December 30, 1980, in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Early Life and Escape to Belgium

Mbenga was born and raised in Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo. His father was a government employee. When the regime in the country changed, it became unsafe for those who worked for the previous government to stay. Mbenga's father was eventually arrested, but he managed to secure the release of his sons, who were also arrested and facing execution.

Mbenga fled to Belgium on a plane, where he sought asylum. He lived in a refugee center, where he was discovered by legendary Belgian basketball player Willy Steveniers, who became his mentor.

Professional Career and NBA Success

In the 2004-2005 season, Mbenga signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks. He continued to play for the team in the following year, but became a free agent at the end of the 2005-2006 season. From that point on, Mbenga's three-season contract with the Mavericks was worth two million dollars per year.

However, the Mavericks decided to part ways with Mbenga in order to include another player, Juwan Howard, in their team. On November 17, 2007, Mbenga signed a contract with the Golden State Warriors, led by his former Dallas coach Don Nelson. He was released from the team on January 6, 2008, and later that month, he received a ten-day contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. On February 11, 2008, Mbenga's contract with the Lakers was extended for the remainder of the 2007-2008 season.

Achievements and Popularity

On February 7, 2007, Mbenga suffered a knee injury during a game against the Memphis Grizzlies. What initially seemed like a simple strain turned out to be a serious anterior cruciate ligament tear, requiring surgery.

On March 6, 2009, during a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Mbenga set a personal career record by scoring 10 points with a shooting efficiency of 4-5, four rebounds, and five blocks, all in just seventeen minutes of play. He started gaining popularity in the games leading up to this milestone, and the match against Minnesota solidified it.

On the evening of June 14, 2009, Mbenga won his first NBA title with the Lakers.
