Early Life and Education

Wisliceny, born in Bielefeld, Germany, initially pursued theological studies but abandoned them to become a journalist. He joined the Nazi Party in 1931.

Involvement with the SD and Gestapo

In 1934, Wisliceny joined the Sicherheitsdienst (SD), the SS intelligence agency. He served as the head of its "Jewish" department from 1936 to 1937, during which time Adolf Eichmann was his subordinate. Wisliceny subsequently worked in the SD's Danzig office.

Holocaust Involvement

In 1940, Wisliceny joined the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), where he became involved in the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question." He was sent to Slovakia in September 1940 as a "consultant on Jewish affairs," where he played a role in the deportation of thousands of Jews.

In February 1943, Wisliceny traveled to Greece with Eichmann. There, they oversaw the deportation of between 44,000 and 56,000 Jews from Thessaloniki, primarily to Auschwitz. From October 1943, Wisliceny served as the head of the security police and SD in Athens.

In February 1944, Wisliceny was transferred to Hungary, where he participated in the deportation of approximately 400,000 Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz, where most were gassed upon arrival.

Post-War Arrest and Trial

After the war, Wisliceny was arrested in Austria on May 12, 1945. He testified as a witness at the Nuremberg Trials. In 1948, he was extradited to Czechoslovakia and hanged in Bratislava for his role in the Holocaust.

Legacy

Wisliceny remains a notorious figure in Holocaust history. His brother, Günther Wisliceny, also served in the SS and received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
