Adam Dietrich Heinrich von Bülow: Prussian Military Pioneer
Early Life and Military CareerAdam Dietrich Heinrich von Bülow was born in 1757 in Falkenberg, Saxony-Anhalt. The younger brother of General Friedrich Wilhelm von Bülow, he served in the Prussian Army from 1773 to 1786, before briefly joining the Netherlands military.
Literary and Theatrical Pursuits
After leaving the military, Bülow attempted a career in theater, traveling to the United States twice as well as to England and France. His playwriting endeavors, however, met with limited success.
Residence in Berlin
From 1804, Bülow resided in Berlin, where he became known for his strategic writings, including the seminal work "Spirit of the Latest Military System."
Controversy and Imprisonment
Bülow's pamphlet "The Campaign of 1805," which criticized Russian General Kutuzov, landed him in trouble. He was imprisoned in Kolberg Fortress and later extradited to Russia.
Death and Legacy
Bülow's fate after his extradition remains uncertain. One theory suggests he died en route to Riga from illness or battle wounds. He passed away in Riga in 1807.
Contribution to Military Science
Bülow's writings made significant contributions to military science. He coined the term "strategy" and differentiated it from tactics. Additionally, he introduced the concept of the operational base.
Other Works
Besides the previously mentioned works, Bülow also authored "Doctrines of Modern Warfare," "Gustavus Adolphus' Campaign in Germany," and "Perspectives on Future Events."
