Biography of Aramais Achemyan
Early Life and EducationAramaïs Achemyan was born in Syria to Armenian refugee parents. He moved to Beirut at a young age, where he attended the American University of Beirut and established a bookstore.
Literary Career
Achemyan emerged as a prominent figure in the new literary movement of Armenian prose in the 1960s. Writing both in Armenian and English, his works were published in Lebanon, the USSR, and the USA. His writing style is characterized by intense plots and raw realism.
Political Activism
Achemyan played a significant role in the establishment of the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) and helped develop its political agenda. He was involved in the organization's activities and became internationally known for his advocacy for Armenian rights.
Literary Legacy
One of Achemyan's most renowned novels, "Ardghohi Zharangornernë," explores the life of young Armenians in Lebanon during the 1970s. His works have received critical acclaim for their poignant insights and compelling narratives.
Journalism and Advocacy
From 1978 to 1989, Achemyan served as editor of the magazine "Spyurk." He used this platform to advocate for political prisoners, including Gurgen Yanikian, and for the rights of Armenians to return to Western Armenia. He also addressed the issues facing Armenians in Karabakh and Nakhichevan, even before the start of the Karabakh movement.
Later Life and Legacy
Achemyan participated in the organization of the First Armenian Congress in Paris in 1979. He passed away in Paris, France. His publicistic works were posthumously published in 1999, further cementing his legacy as a prominent writer and political activist.
