Dilip Kumar, born Yusuf Khan, was an Indian actor, film producer, and politician. He was the first actor to win the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in 1954 and holds the record for most wins in this category, with 8 awards, along with Shahrukh Khan. Critics hailed him as the greatest actor in Bollywood history.
Early Life and Career
After the partition of India, Dilip Kumar's family moved to Pune and started a dry fruit business. He was noticed by renowned actress Devika Rani, who cast him in his debut film, "Jwar Bhata" (1944). Although the film was unsuccessful, his breakthrough came with "Jugnu" (1947). His performance in "Andaz" (1949) alongside Raj Kapoor catapulted him to stardom.
The Tragedy King
Dilip Kumar became known as the "Tragedy King" of Bollywood for his many tragic roles in films such as "Deedar" (1951), "Devdas" (1955), and "Madhumati" (1958). He continued to star in successful films, including "Ram Aur Shyam" (1967), "Kranti" (1981), "Vidhaata" (1982), "Shakti" (1982), "Karma" (1986), and "Saudagar" (1991). He retired from acting in 2002.
Personal Life and Legacy
Dilip Kumar married Saira Banu, a beauty queen and actress, in 1966. He played an active role in bridging the gap between India and Pakistan and served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2000 to 2006. He was awarded by the Government of Pakistan for his efforts. He was also appointed Sheriff of Mumbai in 2000.
Dilip Kumar passed away on July 7, 2021, at the age of 98. He had been hospitalized twice in June due to respiratory issues and was diagnosed with bilateral pleural effusion. His legacy as the greatest actor of Indian cinema continues to inspire and entertain audiences worldwide.
