Early Life and Expedition to the East
Diogo Lopes de Sequeira, a Portuguese navigator and admiral, played a significant role in the Portuguese empire's expansion into the Indian Ocean. In 1508, he commanded a specially equipped fleet of four ships dispatched from Lisbon to search for the legendary "Spice Islands" east of Ceylon.
Arrival in Malacca
In April 1509, Sequeira's fleet reached Cochin, where they were joined by additional ships and soldiers. They then sailed through the Bay of Bengal and arrived in Malacca in September. The local sultan initially welcomed the Portuguese and signed a trade agreement.
Betrayal and Conflict
However, a few days later, while most of Sequeira's men were ashore, the sultan ordered an attack on their ships. Admiral Sequeira was forewarned and managed to repel the assault, but those on land were mostly killed or captured. Despite artillery fire and negotiations, Sequeira was unable to secure the release of his men and was forced to sail away.
Return to Malacca
In 1511, the Portuguese returned to Malacca under the command of Afonso d'Albuquerque. After a fierce siege, they seized the city. Sequeira played a part in this conquest.
Governorship of Portuguese India
From 1518 to 1522, Sequeira served as governor of Portuguese India, overseeing the administration and defense of the empire's territories in the region. During his tenure, he established Goa as the capital of Portuguese India and played a vital role in consolidating Portuguese power in the East.
