Dixie Virginia Carter was an American actress born in 1939 in McLemoresville, Tennessee, USA. She spent much of her childhood in Memphis and pursued her education at the University of Tennessee and the University of Memphis, earning a degree in English. During her time in college, Dixie often won beauty pageants at the university level.
Acting Career
Dixie made her debut as an actress in 1960 when she performed in the play 'Carousel.' In 1963, she moved to New York with dreams of a successful acting career and soon began receiving roles on Broadway. In 1967, Dixie married businessman Arthur Carter, and they had two daughters together, Mary Dixie and Ginna.
After taking a break from acting to focus on her family, Dixie faced difficulties when she decided to return to the industry. She struggled to find roles until she appeared in the television series 'The Edge of Night' from 1974 to 1976. During this period, she also had roles in series such as 'Lou Grant' and 'Diff'rent Strokes.'
One of Dixie's most successful roles was portraying the lawyer Julia Sugarbaker in the sitcom 'Designing Women,' which aired from 1986 to 1993. Russian audiences may be most familiar with Dixie Carter from her role as Gloria Hodge, Orson's mother, in the series 'Desperate Housewives.' She was nominated for an Emmy for this role in 2007.

Personal Life and Legacy
In 2010, Dixie Carter was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on April 10 of the same year. She was previously married to Arthur Carter, whom she divorced in 1977. She then married George Hearn, a fellow Broadway actor, in the same year. Their marriage ended after two years, and Dixie married actor Hal Holbrook in 1984. She met Holbrook during the filming of the telefilm 'The Killing of Randy Webster' in 1981.
