Early LifeRichard Mulligan was born in 1932 in New York City, USA. He had an older brother, Robert Mulligan, who was a renowned director.

Career Beginnings
After graduating from Columbia University, Richard started his acting career on stage, making his Broadway debut in the play "All The Way Home" in 1960. In 1966, he received the Theatre World Award for his performance in the play "Mating Dance". During this time, Mulligan also began appearing in films and television.

Television and Film Career
Mulligan made his television debut in the early 1960s in series such as "Armstrong Circle Theatre" and "Route 66". In 1964, he appeared in the drama film "One Potato, Two Potato", which marked the beginning of his film career. In 1970, Mulligan portrayed General George Armstrong Custer in the western film "Little Big Man", alongside Faye Dunaway and Dustin Hoffman.

During the 1970s, Mulligan took on numerous roles in television series, including "Little House on the Prairie", "Charlie's Angels", "Soap", and "The Partridge Family". He won an Emmy Award for his role as Burt Campbell in the series "Soap" in 1977. He also received another Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role as Dr. Harry Weston in the series "Empty Nest".

In 1981, Mulligan gained popularity for his portrayal of Felix Farmer, a Hollywood producer, in the comedy film "S.O.B.". He also voiced characters in animated projects such as "Oliver & Company", "The Angry Beavers", and "Hey Arnold!".

Later Life and Legacy
Mulligan's last on-screen role was in the 1997 television comedy "Heaven Will Wait". Throughout his nearly forty-year career, he appeared in over seventy films and television shows, as well as numerous stage productions.
Mulligan was married four times. His first wife was Patricia Jones, with whom he had a son named James. He later married Joan Hackett and Lenore Stevens. His final marriage was to actress Rachel Ryan, which lasted from 1992 to 1993.
On September 26, 2000, Richard Mulligan passed away at the age of 67 due to cancer. He died in his Los Angeles, California home. Mulligan's remains were cremated according to his wishes, and no public funeral was held. He was survived by his son James and his two brothers, Robert and James. Mulligan has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as a testament to his contributions to the entertainment industry.
