Early Life and EducationBorn into a family of physicians in Tbilisi, Georgia, on the 8th of March, 1910 (23rd February in the Julian calendar), Dmitriy Aleksidze's early life was marked by artistic pursuits. He completed both his primary education and dance studies in his hometown. In 1934, Aleksidze graduated from the prestigious GITIS in Moscow, specializing in directing.
Theatre Career
TbilisiAleksidze's career began in 1935 as a director at the Tbilisi Shota Rustaveli Theatre. He quickly ascended the ranks and became the chief director from 1959 to 1964.
Ukraine
In 1964, Aleksidze embarked on a journey to Ukraine, where he worked at the Ivan Franko Kyiv Academic Drama and Comedy Theatre from 1964 to 1970. He served as a director and, from 1968 onward, as chief director. He also staged productions at the Lesya Ukrainka Russian Drama Theatre and the Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine.
Return to Georgia
After his stint in Ukraine, Aleksidze returned to Georgia in 1970, where he became the chief director of the Kote Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre until 1984.
Artistic Style
Aleksidze's directorial vision was characterized by a penchant for monumental forms, epic grandeur, and innovative reinterpretations of classical works from antiquity, Georgia, Ukraine, and Russia.
Teaching and Legacy
In addition to his theatrical achievements, Aleksidze made a significant impact as an educator. He taught at the Tbilisi Shota Rustaveli Theatre Institute from 1939 to 1964 and from 1970 until his passing. He also served as the institute's rector from 1950 to 1951 and as the head of the acting department. Aleksidze was also a professor at Tbilisi University and the Kyiv Institute of Theatrical Art.

His granddaughter, Anna Grohol-Aleksidze, continues the family tradition as a ballet director and chief choreographer.
