Dmitry Butakov: From Comedian to Musical Voice of Belarus

Early Life and Education

Dmitry Butakov was born on March 2, 1972, in Baranovichi, Brest Region, Belarus. Growing up in a city where KVN (a popular comedy game show) was a cultural phenomenon, Butakov developed a passion for humor. After graduating high school and serving in the army, he moved to Moscow to study as a translator at the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR.

KVN Career

During his time in Moscow, Butakov joined the KVN teams of the Russian Armed Forces and the Modern Humanitarian University, known as "Eskadron Gusar." In 1995, alongside his team, he became the champion of the KVN Higher League. Returning to Baranovichi, Butakov founded the "Club of Life Lovers" (KLyuZh), which became the city's most successful team, reaching the semifinals of the Minsk Euroleague. Despite joining the main Belarusian KVN team, CP (Minsk), creative differences led Butakov and his team to leave and focus on independent performances.

Musical Journey

Following the 2020 presidential elections in Belarus, Butakov co-founded the musical group "Galasy ZMesta" in Baranovichi. As its frontman, songwriter, and vocalist, Butakov played guitar alongside fellow former KVN comedians: Maxim Ponomarenko on drums and keyboards, Evgeny Kardash on guitar, Evgeny Artyukh on bass, and Irina Sorgovitskaya on backing vocals. The group's music emerged as a response to the protests and political unrest in Belarus, offering a voice that supported stability and criticized opposition figures.

Controversy and "Eurovision"

Butakov's support for the incumbent government has drawn criticism, with some accusing him of being politically biased. However, he maintains that he is nonpartisan and believes in preserving stability. Despite the controversy, Butakov's group was selected to represent Belarus at the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam. Their submission, "Ya Nauchu Tebya," was initially deemed to have political undertones and was requested to be revised. Butakov declined, citing misinterpretation, and promised to create a new song.

Personal Life and Business

Butakov's personal life remains relatively private. He is known to be involved in business and is registered as an individual entrepreneur in the restaurant industry. In addition to his musical and business interests, Butakov translates from Chinese and assists in installing Chinese equipment.
