Early Life and Career

Dmitry Ivanovich Khvorostinin, a prince from the Khvorostinin family, began his service as a stolnik. Before 1563, he served as a voivode (military commander) in cities along the Volga River.

Lithuanian Campaign

In 1563, Khvorostinin was appointed voivode alongside Prince M. V. Glinsky for a campaign against the Lithuanians. He participated in the capture of the city of Polotsk, being among the first to enter the fortress.

Victory over the Crimean Khanate

In 1564, Khvorostinin led a force to victory against Crimean forces that had returned with loot from near Kaluga.

Defense of Bolhov

In 1566, Crimean forces attacked Bolhov. Voivodes P. M. Shchenyatev and I. V. Sheremetev failed to repel them. A force led by oprichnina voivodes A. P. Teltyatevsky and Dmitry and Andrei Khvorostinin arrived to assist Bolhov. Upon learning of the approach of the fresh Russian army, Devlet I Giray withdrew. For this campaign, Khvorostinin received a golden reward from the tsar.

Liberation of Prisoners from Crimean Raiders

In 1570, during another Crimean invasion, Dmitry Khvorostinin and F. Lvov defeated a Crimean raiding party near Zaraysk, freeing many captives.

Battle of Molodi

In 1572, Khvorostinin commanded the Advance Regiment of the Russian army during the Crimean Khanate's final invasion of Moscow. The invasion culminated in the Battle of Molodi, where the Russian forces annihilated the combined Crimean and Turkish army.

Siege of Oberpalen

In 1578, Khvorostinin was appointed second voivode of the Big Regiment in the Livonian campaign. Under his leadership, the army captured the city of Oberpalen, which had been occupied by a strong Swedish garrison after the flight of King Magnus.

Defeat of Lithuanian and Livonian Forces

In 1579, Khvorostinin defeated Lithuanian and Livonian forces near Rzhev. He then ravaged towns and villages along his march into Lithuania, targeting Dubrovno, Orsha, Shklov, Mogilev, and Radoml.

Battle of Lyalytsy

In 1582, as the Swedish army launched a new offensive, Khvorostinin, commanding the Advance Regiment, along with Duma nobleman M. A. Bezzenin, attacked them near the village of Lyalytsy. The Russian forces defeated the Swedish forces, forcing them to retreat to Narva.

Suppression of Revolts

In 1583-1584, Khvorostinin suppressed the uprising of the Meadow Mari and Kazan Tatars. He was awarded the rank of boyar and appointed as the sovereign's governor in Ryazan, tasked with guarding the border.

Defeat of Swedish Forces

In 1590, Khvorostinin led Russian troops to victory over a 4,000-strong Swedish force under General Gustav Banér near Narva. The Swedish forces retreated to the city of Wesenberg after a fierce battle.
