Dmitry Evgenyevich Okhotsimsky was a renowned Soviet and Russian scientist who made significant contributions to the field of space flight dynamics. Born in Moscow in 1924, Okhotsimsky's academic journey began at the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow State University (MSU) in 1939.

Interrupted Studies and Military Service

With the outbreak of World War II, Okhotsimsky's studies were interrupted as the faculty was closed. He participated in the war effort by digging anti-tank trenches and working in a military factory. In 1941, he was drafted into the Red Army but was later demobilized due to severe nearsightedness.

Return to Academia and Early Contributions

After demobilization in 1942, Okhotsimsky resumed his studies at MSU. In 1946, he presented a groundbreaking paper on rocket flight optimization, where he employed an original method that foreshadowed the later Pontryagin's maximum principle.

Joining the Keldysh Group

In 1949, Okhotsimsky joined the Mathematical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where he worked under the guidance of M. V. Keldysh, the future president of the USSR Academy of Sciences and chief scientific advisor to the Soviet space program. Under Keldysh's leadership, Okhotsimsky and his team became integral to various space projects.

Focus on Space Flight Optimization

Throughout his career, Okhotsimsky's research focused on solving variational optimization problems in space flight. He devised numerical methods and programming principles that were applied to early Soviet computers. Following the launch of the first satellite, he published seminal papers on the ballistic aspects of satellite flight.

The "Keldysh Team"

Under Okhotsimsky's direction, a remarkable group of young scientists emerged, known as the "Keldysh Team." Several members of this team, including E. L. Akim, T. M. Eneev, and A. K. Platonov, became distinguished scientists in their own right.

Contributions to Major Space Missions

Okhotsimsky played a crucial role in planning space missions to the Moon, Mars, and Venus. During the early unsuccessful attempts to dock Soyuz spacecraft, his analysis helped identify and resolve the underlying causes of oscillations.

Innovations in Satellite Control and Stabilization

Okhotsimsky developed innovative algorithms for controlled atmospheric entry and passive satellite stabilization using gravitational field gradients and inertia tensor non-sphericity. He also initiated the establishment of a specialized course on space flight dynamics at MSU.

Leadership in Academia and Robotics

In addition to his research, Okhotsimsky held various leadership positions. He served as Deputy Academic Secretary of the Department of Mechanics and Control Processes of the Russian Academy of Sciences and became a professor at MSU in 1959. He was also the head of the Department of Theoretical Mechanics from 1962 until his passing.

Legacy and Recognition

Okhotsimsky's pioneering contributions to space flight dynamics earned him numerous awards and honors, including the Hero of Socialist Labor (1961), the Lenin Prize (1957), and the Keldysh Gold Medal (2001). He was elected a member-correspondent of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1961 and a full member in 1991. The minor planet 8062 Okhotsimsky was named in his honor.
