Biography of Dmitry Shurov
Dmitry Shurov, a Ukrainian musician and pianist, was born in Vinnytsia in 1981. He comes from a family of artists and musicians, with his father being a poet, artist, and television program editor, and his mother being a teacher and musician. From a young age, Dmitry showed a talent for music, learning scales and piano techniques at the age of four.
Early Musical Education
Dmitry's passion for self-learning and independent study of the piano eventually led him to pursue formal education. After completing four years at a music school, he went on to study conducting and choral singing at a music college. During his youth, Dmitry spent a significant amount of time abroad and developed a strong command of the English and French languages. He studied at the Auguste Renoir High School in Limoges, France, as well as in Utah, USA, where he played in a jazz orchestra, sang in a choir, and performed in a barbershop quartet. He also developed a love for American musicals from the 1950s and 60s while attending a theater class.
Career with Okean Elzy
In 2000, Dmitry was invited to join the Ukrainian band Okean Elzy. He quickly became an integral part of the group and participated in the creation of two studio albums. He played on three tours across Ukraine and the CIS, showcasing their albums "Vymahay bilshoho" (2001), "Tur Supersymetriya" (2003), and "Tikhyi Okean" (2004). Dmitry's debut concert with Okean Elzy took place in Odessa on April 1, 2001. During his time with the band, he co-wrote the song "Oto bula vesna," which was initially intended for a collection of Ukrainian folk ritual songs but was later released on the acoustic album "Tvij format" and compilation album "1221."
Esthetic Education and Collaboration with Zemfira
Following his departure from Okean Elzy in 2004, Dmitry joined the band Esthetic Education. With this new collective, he released three albums, a single, and performed numerous concerts. In 2006, Dmitry was invited by the Russian singer Zemfira to become the pianist for her band. He collaborated with Zemfira on her fifth studio album "Spasibo" (2007) and embarked on a concert tour to support the album, playing nearly 100 shows. One of their performances, titled "Zelenyi teatr v Zemfire" and directed by Renata Litvinova, was recorded and released on DVD.
Solo Projects and Future Plans
Alongside his involvement in various bands, Dmitry Shurov is currently working on several solo projects. He is in the process of creating an opera with the working title "Lev i Leya" and recording his debut solo album under the project name Pianoбой. Dmitry's sister, Olga Shurova, a graduate of the Kyiv Linguistic University, is assisting him in these endeavors. In December 2009, an animated music video for his song "Smisla.net" was released on Ukrainian music channels.
