Biography of Jon Anderson
Jon Roy Anderson is an English rock musician and the original leader and vocalist of the progressive rock band Yes. He is also known for his solo work and collaboration with Greek musician Vangelis in the duo Jon & Vangelis.
Early Life
Jon Roy Anderson was born in the English town of Accrington to Irish parents Albert and Kathleen Anderson. He attended St. John's Infants School and began his musical career at the age of 10, playing the washboard in the skiffle group "Little John's Skiffle Group". He later changed his name from John to Jon because he always dreamed of being called Jonathan.
At the age of 15, Jon left school and had several different jobs, including working as a farm laborer, truck driver, and milkman. He also tried to pursue a football career but was rejected due to his frail physique. In 1962, Anderson joined the group The Warriors (also known as The Electric Warriors) and later left in 1967.
Formation of Yes
In 1968, Anderson met bassist Chris Squire and guitarist Peter Banks at a London club called La Chasse. They formed the group Mabel Greer's Toyshop, which later evolved into the band Yes. Anderson became the frontman of the group, and they released their debut album "Yes" in 1969. Anderson was the creative force behind the band and was responsible for creating epic compositions such as "Close to the Edge" and "Awaken". He remained with the band until 1979.
Solo Career and Collaboration with Vangelis
Throughout the 1970s, Anderson pursued an active solo career while still being a member of Yes. He collaborated with various artists and released several solo albums. In 1980, Anderson and Vangelis released the album "Short Stories" and went on to release several more albums together.
Later Career and Yes Reunion
In the 1980s and 1990s, Anderson continued to work on solo projects and collaborate with other musicians. He reunited with Yes in 1983 but left again in 1988 due to creative differences. In 1989, Anderson formed the group Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe (ABWH) with other former members of Yes. They released an album together called "Union". In recent years, Anderson has continued to release solo albums and has toured with his own band.
Legacy
Jon Anderson's voice has been described as "angelic" and he is known for his unique vocal style. He is responsible for the majority of the lyrics and mystical themes in Yes' music. His poetic and expressive lyrics, combined with the freedom of the English language, have led to a wide range of interpretations. Despite stating that his lyrics are simply a companion to the music, fans continue to analyze and discuss the meaning behind his words.
