Dmitry Verkeenko, a Russian actor, began his acting career with the role of the young autocratic boy Peter II. Today, he is a third-year student at the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK), studying in the workshop of Alexei Batalov.

Unexpected Entry into the Film Industry
Dmitry Verkeenko entered the film industry somewhat accidentally. In 1998, director Svetlana Druzhinina started shooting a historical series about palace coups. Due to financial constraints, the filming process experienced significant delays. One such hiatus lasted for nine months. When filming resumed, the creators of the series were shocked to see that Ivan Sinitsyn, who played the role of young Peter II, had transformed from a fragile boy into a mustached teenager. They urgently needed a replacement.

The Discovery of Dmitry Verkeenko
Svetlana Druzhinina recalls the search for a new actor: "We called for auditions and families with children flocked to us... And finally, fate smiled upon us. Actor and director Semyon Morozov recommended a boy to me, whom he had cast in one of the episodes of the children's television program 'Eralash.' He didn't speak a word in that episode but looked at the girl with very loving eyes. The boy's name was Dmitry Verkeenko. However, when Dmitry came to us and started speaking... it was a typical Moscow accent: fast, indistinct speech, short breaths... I stopped him and asked, 'Have you read "Romeo and Juliet"?' He shook his head, indicating he hadn't. I asked him to bring the tragedy by Shakespeare next time and read Romeo's monologue under Juliet's balcony. And there he came again with a huge volume. I hoped he had memorized the monologue and would read it with expression. But Dmitry just licked his finger, quickly found the right page, and... read the entire poetry of the great Shakespeare with the same indistinct speech. I was desperate! Thankfully, his accompanying grandfather brought a cassette, which we immediately watched. We saw children - boys and girls participating in a ballroom dance competition. Waltzes, rumbas, tangos... One of the best couples was the charming girl and our Dmitry Verkeenko! The cassette turned out to be fateful. I realized that we should focus on what he could do well. He is very flexible, which is why he appeared in a fencing scene in the second film. He fought with Volodya Ilyin, Dima Kharatyan, and after two or three days of rehearsals, he mastered it perfectly. He quickly learned to ride a horse as well. I must say that many artists became excellent equestrians under my guidance, including Sasha Domogarov, Sergey Zhigunov, Dmitry Kharatyan... And Dmitry Verkeenko holds himself incredibly well in the saddle."

Dmitry Verkeenko's acting career began with his role as the autocratic boy Peter II.
