Early Life and Family
Boris Mikhailovich Dorliak was born in Russia to a family of French aristocrats who had fled the French Revolution. His father, Lev Fabianovich Dorliak, was an executive at the Russian State Bank, while his mother, Ksenia Nikolaevna, was a lady-in-waiting to Empress Maria Feodorovna and an opera singer.
Education and Career
Dorliak attended the Petrischule before moving to Moscow with his mother. He studied at a theater school and later joined the Vakhtangov Theater, where he performed from 1928 to 1938. Known for his athletic physique, he was considered one of the most handsome actors on the Moscow stage.
Film and Controversy
Dorliak's starring role in the 1936 film "A Strict Young Man" brought him national fame. However, his personal life became the subject of scandal when an article in the cinema magazine "Kino" accused him of immorality. As a result, he was banned from further film roles.
Illness and Death
While on tour in Transbaikalia, Dorliak contracted typhoid fever and died in Irkutsk on September 18, 1938, at the age of 26.
Legacy
Dorliak's son, Dmitry (1937-2018), was a member of various Moscow theater companies before emigrating to France. He wrote a book about his childhood, spent in the home of pianist Sviatoslav Richter, who became his adoptive father.
Final Years and Death
In Dmitry's later years, he inherited the dacha in the Moscow region that had belonged to his aunt Nina Dorliak and her husband, Sviatoslav Richter. He passed away in Paris in March 2018 at the age of 81.
