Early Life and Athletics
Dorota Rabczewska, the Polish pop sensation known mononymously as Doda, was born on February 15, 1984, in Ciechanów, Poland, to Wanda and Paweł Rabczewski. Doda's older brother, Rafał, is her current manager.
At age 13, Doda pursued athletics, excelling in long jump and 100-meter sprints. She won provincial school championships in 1000 and 600-meter races and shot put, even securing a bronze medal in Poland's junior championships. However, she eventually traded sports for a music career.
Early Music Career
Doda's musical endeavors began in her teenage years when she joined the theater group "Studio Buffo" in Warsaw in 1998. Simultaneously, she took vocal lessons from Elżbieta Zapendowska, Poland's renowned vocal coach.
In 2002, Doda rose to initial fame through her participation in the reality television show "Bar," where she promoted the debut album of the band Virgin. In 2004, at the age of 20, Doda joined the high-IQ society, Mensa, with an IQ of 156.
Music Career: Virgin
At 16, Doda auditioned and became the lead vocalist of the band Virgin. The band's debut album, "Virgin," was released in 2002, featuring the hit singles "To Ty" and "Mam Tylko Ciebie."
Two years later, Virgin released their sophomore album, "Bimbo," which became the best-selling album in Poland within a week of its release. The album's lead single, "Dżaga," became an instant hit, followed by "Kolejny Raz" and "Nie zawiedź mnie."
After several lineup changes and television appearances, Virgin presented "Znak Pokoju" at the Sopot International Song Festival. Their third and final studio album, "Ficca," was released on October 17, 2005, leading to a concert tour. The album's first single, "Znak Pokoju," was dedicated to Pope John Paul II, while "2 Bajki" became another enduring hit.
In December 2006, Doda terminated her contract with Virgin's manager.
Music Career: SoloAfter leaving Virgin and making several television appearances, Doda signed with Universal Music Polska and released her debut solo single, "Katharsis." The song premiered at the TOPtrendy Festival, and thirteen days later, Doda's debut solo album, "Diamond Bitch," hit shelves.
"To Jest To," the album's second single, was released in September 2007. The album charted at number one on the Polish Albums Chart for five weeks and went double platinum. Doda re-released the album a year later with an additional song, "Nie Daj Się."
Further singles released from the album, "Rany" and "Dziękuję," were accompanied by music videos. In 2011, Doda released the singles "Bad Girls" and "XXX" from the album "7 pokus głownych" ("7 Main Temptations").
Two more singles followed: the soundtrack "Kac WaWa" in 2012 and "Wkręceni (High Life)" in 2013. Doda's concert DVD, "Fly High Tour Live," premiered in 2014, and she continued her solo music career with the release of "Riotka."
Personal Life
Doda's personal life has been subject to intense media scrutiny. She was married to footballer Radosław Majdan from 2005 to 2008. In 2009, she began dating Behemoth frontman Adam Darski, and they became engaged in 2010. However, they parted ways in 2011.
Doda's relationship with dancer and choreographer Błażej Szychowski was short-lived. In 2013, it emerged that Doda has a half-sister named Paulina, of whom she spoke negatively.
In a 2014 interview, Doda expressed her desire to find "The One," stating a preference for artists and creative individuals. She described her ideal partner as courageous, with more testosterone than her and possessing traits often associated with "naive teenage girls' diaries."
Awards and Recognition
Throughout her career, Doda has received numerous accolades. She won the MTV Europe Music Award for "Best Polish Act" in 2007 and 2009, and came second in the "Best European Act" category in 2009.
Doda has also been the recipient of 12 VIVA Comet Awards, including "Video of the Year" for "Rany" and "XXX," "Artist of the 10-Year Anniversary," and "Hit of the 10-Year Anniversary" for "Szansa."
