Biography of Dominique Gorie

Dominique Gorie is a current NASA astronaut who has made significant contributions to space exploration. He was born on May 2, 1957, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA.

Education

Gorie completed his high school education at Palmetto High School in Miami, Florida, in 1975. He then pursued a bachelor's degree in Oceanographic Studies at the United States Air Force Academy in 1979. In 1987, he attended the United States Naval Test Pilot School, and later obtained a degree from the University of Tennessee in 1990.

Service

From 1981 to 1983, Gorie served as a pilot of the A-7E "Corsair" aircraft in the 46th Attack Squadron on board the USS America. He then transitioned to piloting the F/A-18 "Hornet" aircraft in the 132nd Strike Squadron on board the USS Coral Sea from 1983 to 1986. Gorie's career continued as a test pilot in the United States Naval Test Pilot School from 1988 to 1990. He later served as a pilot of the F/A-18 "Hornet" in the 87th Strike Squadron on board the USS Roosevelt from 1990 to 1992. During the "Desert Storm" operation, Gorie participated in 38 combat missions. He then served in the 106th Strike Squadron at the United States Space Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from 1992 to 1994. Throughout his career, Gorie accumulated over 4000 flight hours on 30 different types of aircraft and made more than 600 landings on an aircraft carrier.

Space Activities

In December 1994, Gorie was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA. From March 1995 to March 1996, he underwent general space training at the NASA Johnson Space Center.

Spaceflights

Gorie's first spaceflight took place from June 2 to June 12, 1998, as the pilot of the "Discovery" spacecraft for the STS-91 mission. The mission's primary objective was to dock with the Russian orbital complex "Mir" for the 9th flight of the "Shuttle-Mir" program. His second spaceflight occurred from February 11 to February 22, 2000, as the pilot of the "Endeavour" spacecraft for the STS-99 mission. The main objective of this mission was topographic mapping of the Earth's surface. In total, Gorie has spent 21 days, 1 hour, 33 minutes, and 34 seconds in space.

Awards

Gorie has received numerous awards throughout his career. He was awarded the NASA "Spaceflight Medal" in 1998 and 2000 for his contributions to space exploration. Additionally, he has been honored with the "Combat Merit Cross" and multiple medals from the United States Armed Forces for his service.

Personal Life and Interests

Dominique Gorie is married to Wendy Lu Williams, and they have two children. In his free time, he enjoys skiing, hiking, cycling, and playing golf.
