Biography of Talgat Musabaev
Early Life and EducationTalgat Musabaev was born on January 7, 1951, in the village of Kargaly in the Dzhambyl District of the Alma-Ata Region, Kazakh SSR (now the Republic of Kazakhstan). He completed his secondary education in 1968 at School No. 58 in Alma-Ata. In 1974, Musabaev graduated from the Riga Institute of Civil Aviation Engineers named after Lenin's Komsomol. He continued his education at the Alma-Ata Aero Club DOSAAF in 1984 and the Ulyanovsk Center for Training Aviation Personnel, Dispatchers, and Engineering and Technical Staff of Aviation of the member countries of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (Comecon) in 1989. Finally, in 1993, Musabaev graduated from the Aktobe Higher Flight School.
Career
Musabaev started his career as a shift engineer for aviation and radio-electronic equipment at the Burundai United Air Message Aviation Unit of Civil Aviation from 1974 to 1975. He then served as the secretary of the Komsomol Committee at the Burundai United Air Message Aviation Unit in Alma-Ata from 1975 to 1976. Musabaev worked as an instructor and senior instructor in the political and educational department of the Kazakh Civil Aviation Administration from 1976 to 1979. He was appointed Deputy Commander for Political and Educational Work of the 240th Air Squadron at the Alma-Ata United Aviation Unit from 1979 to 1987. Musabaev then served as a second pilot and aircraft commander of the An-2 aircraft at the Burundai United Aviation Unit from 1987 to 1990. He continued his aviation career as a trainee second pilot and second pilot of the Tu-134 aircraft at the first flight squadron of the Alma-Ata United Aviation Unit from 1990 to 1991.
Space Activities
On March 6, 1991, Musabaev was called to active military service and enrolled as a candidate for research cosmonauts of the 4th group of the Cosmonaut Corps. He became a test cosmonaut of the 1st group on October 22, 1991, and later became the commander of the group and an instructor test cosmonaut on July 9, 1999. Musabaev underwent training as a backup for the first Kazakh cosmonaut, Toktar Aubakirov, and was part of the backup crews for Soyuz TM spacecraft missions.
Spaceflights
Musabaev's first spaceflight was from July 1 to November 4, 1994, as a flight engineer on Soyuz TM-19 and EO-16, with a duration of 125 days, 22 hours, 53 minutes, and 36 seconds. His second spaceflight lasted from January 29 to August 25, 1998, as the commander of Soyuz TM-27 and EO-25, with a duration of 207 days, 12 hours, 51 minutes, and 2 seconds. Musabaev's third spaceflight took place from April 28 to May 6, 2001, as the commander of the visiting expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) on Soyuz TM-32 (launch) and Soyuz TM-31 (landing), with a duration of 7 days, 22 hours, 4 minutes, and 3 seconds. In total, he spent 341 days, 9 hours, 48 minutes, and 41 seconds in space.
Awards and Honors
Talgat Musabaev has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to space exploration. He has been named a Hero of the Russian Federation, a People's Hero of Kazakhstan, and has been awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples, the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" III Class, the Order "Otan," and the Astana Medal from Kazakhstan. Musabaev has also received the Order of the Austrian Republic and the NASA Space Flight Medal.
Personal Life and Interests
Musabaev is married to Victoria Voldemarovna Latsis, and they have two children, a son named Daniyar (born on July 3, 1975) and a daughter named Kamila (born on January 28, 1981). He has a passion for music.
