The Early Years of Saint Dominic of Silos
Born into a humble family in Navarre, Saint Dominic of Silos spent his youth tending his father's flocks. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, he pursued an ecclesiastical education and became a priest.
Monastic Life and Reform
Dominic entered the Benedictine monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla, where his abbot dispatched him to the dilapidated monastery of Santa María de Cañas in Navarre. Under Dominic's guidance, the monastery underwent a remarkable transformation, restoring it to its former glory.
Prior of San Millán and Royal Conflict
Upon his return to San Millán, Dominic was appointed prior. However, his resistance to King García III of Navarre's financial demands led to his dismissal from the position.
Refuge in Castile and the Abbacy of Silos
Seeking refuge in Castile, Dominic sought the patronage of King Ferdinand I. With the king's support, he joined the monastery of San Sebastián de Silos, becoming its abbot in 1041. Under Dominic's leadership, the monastery swiftly flourished, regaining its former prominence.
Death and Sanctification
Dominic of Silos passed away in the year 1073. His death was swiftly followed by his veneration as a saint, and the monastery where he had served as abbot was renamed in his honor.
A Royal Tradition
In Spain, until the year 1931, a peculiar custom persisted: whenever the queen gave birth, the relics of Saint Dominic of Silos would be transported to the palace and placed by her bedside, believed to bring blessings and divine protection to the royal family.
