Life and Canonization of Saint Demetrios of Basarbovo
Early Life and BackgroundSaint Demetrios of Basarbovo was an Orthodox saint revered in the order of Venerables. He was born in the village of Basarbovo, located in the valley of the Rusenski-Lom River near the city of Ruse, Bulgaria.
Devotion and Legacy
Throughout his life, Demetrios dedicated himself to religious devotion and monasticism. His teachings and actions left a lasting impact on his followers, inspiring them with his unwavering faith and spiritual guidance.
Protection of Relics
During the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774, concerns arose about the potential desecration of Saint Demetrios's relics by Turkish forces. To preserve his sacred remains, plans were made to transport them to Russia for safekeeping.
Intervention and Enshrinement
As the relics approached Bucharest, local Christian leaders, including merchant Hadji Demetrios and Metropolitan Grigore II of Ungro-Wallachia, petitioned Count Pyotr Saltykov to leave them in the city. Their request was granted, and Saint Demetrios's relics were enshrined in the cathedral, where they remain to this day.
Canonization and Patron Saint
On October 27, 1955, Saint Demetrios of Basarbovo was officially canonized as a saint and became the patron saint of Bucharest.
Revered Relic and Symbol of Unity
In 2005, at the request of Bulgarian Patriarch Maxim, a portion of Saint Demetrios's relics, housed in an icon, was gifted by Romanian Patriarch Teoctist to the Basarbovo Monastery in Bulgaria. This gesture symbolized the enduring unity and spiritual bond between the two Orthodox nations.
