Coppersmith was born in 1953. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1972. Subsequently, he obtained a Master's degree and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in mathematics from Harvard University in 1975 and 1977, respectively. Coppersmith was a Putnam Fellow from 1968 to 1971.
