Don Coscarelli is an American director, screenwriter, producer, and cinematographer, best known for his work on the "Phantasm" series. Born in the mid-1970s, Coscarelli began his directing career with the release of his debut film, "Jim the World's Greatest," a drama about a teenager's difficult life in an alcoholic family. Originally budgeted at $35,000, the film's budget eventually increased to $100,000. Following a recommendation from critic Charles Champlin of the LA Times, the film was acquired by Universal Pictures for $200,000. This made Coscarelli, at that time, the youngest director to have a film acquired by a major distribution company.

During the production of "Jim the World's Greatest," Coscarelli crossed paths with three individuals who would later play crucial roles in his career and the success of his films. These individuals include actors Angus Scrimm and Reggie Bannister, as well as composer Fred Myrow. Their collaborations would contribute significantly to Coscarelli's rise to worldwide fame.

After completing "Kenny & Company," Coscarelli secluded himself in a mountain cabin for three weeks, where he wrote the screenplay for his most famous film, "Phantasm."
For the production of "Phantasm," Coscarelli once again had to rely on financial support from his father, who provided approximately $300,000. The filming took place in Southern California, where Coscarelli had to rent expensive equipment. Remarkably, Coscarelli not only wrote and directed the film but also served as the cinematographer, editor, and producer.
