Don Decker: A Journey of Hope and Healing

A Shocking Diagnosis

Don Decker, a man who had overcome pancreatic cancer, never expected that a nagging backache would turn out to be a sign of stage IV pancreatic cancer. But as fate would have it, Don's journey to recovery would prove to be a miraculous one.

The Path to Healing

Upon receiving the grim diagnosis, Don knew exactly where he wanted to seek treatment. Thirteen years prior, his father had received exceptional care at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA).

CTCA specialists ruled out surgery due to the tumor's size and spread. Instead, they opted for intra-arterial chemotherapy, a targeted treatment that delivers drugs directly to the tumor. This method reduced the toxic effects on unaffected organs.

A Series of Miracles

After multiple intra-arterial chemotherapy sessions, scans revealed that all signs of cancer in Don's liver had vanished. Over the next six months, he continued receiving chemotherapy once a month.

One year into his CTCA treatment, Don's pancreatic tumor had shrunk to the size of a pea. Repeat scans over the following year showed no changes. However, two years later, the cancer re-emerged.

Life-Saving Surgery

The CTCA team decided that surgery was now possible. Dr. Brown performed the operation, followed by six weeks of treatment involving daily radiation therapy and weekly chemotherapy.

Triumph Over Adversity

The treatment process was physically and emotionally demanding. Don struggled with fatigue, depression, and loss of appetite. But he found solace in the unwavering support of his family and the CTCA staff.

Naturopathic doctors recommended supplements to improve Don's well-being. Acupuncture and massage helped alleviate side effects. Nurses provided emotional support during chemotherapy sessions. And during a bone scan, a technician took time to offer a prayer for Don's well-being.

A Promise Fulfilled

On his initial visit to CTCA, Don declared that he would become Dr. Neelam's next patient to live beyond five years. And he did just that! In 2014, he celebrated five years of survivorship at the hospital's annual Festival of Hope event.

A Legacy of Hope

Following his recovery, Don's three grown children announced that they were expecting children. Today, he is the proud grandfather of six grandchildren, a testament to the power of hope and the relentless spirit of the human body.
