Craig Koonce: Defying Cerebral Palsy

An American with Cerebral Palsy

Craig Koonce is a young American living with cerebral palsy. Despite his diagnosis, Craig does not consider himself disabled and is determined to achieve his goal of walking.

Overcoming Obstacles

While many find it challenging to visit the gym a few times a week, it is a way of life for Craig Koonce. Despite the difficulties he faces in even reaching the gym, he attends regularly. Craig has relied on a wheelchair since childhood due to cerebral palsy.

Powerlifting and Rehabilitation

Craig's personal trainer, Eddie Jensen, has played a crucial role in his powerlifting journey. Together, they have developed a specialized program that not only strengthens Craig's upper body but also targets his weakened legs and back. Sitting down, it is difficult to imagine that Craig cannot walk, as his muscles ripple beneath his shirt.

Walking and Stair Climbing

In addition to powerlifting, Craig continuously works on his mobility by practicing walking. He has progressed to climbing stairs with the support of special rails. While his legs still face challenges, each step he takes brings him closer to his goal. Day by day, Craig challenges the obstacles that cerebral palsy has presented him with.

Triumphs in the Gym

Every day at the gym, Craig achieves small victories, such as walking independently across the room, climbing a flight of stairs, or lifting weights while standing. These feats come with great effort, making each victory even sweeter.

Defying the Odds

When Craig was born, doctors gave him a mere 30% chance of survival. However, his determination to live and his refusal to be defined by his diagnosis have fueled his journey. His mother recalls that Craig did not walk until he was eight years old. His motivation came when his younger brother was born, as he was determined to reach him and play.

"The Impossible Is Possible"

Craig's T-shirt proudly proclaims "The Impossible Is Possible," and it is more than just words. "It's my whole life," he says of his gym endeavors. Beyond weightlifting, Craig also practices wrestling and has even become a personal trainer himself. Those who witness his daily triumph over adversity are inspired to believe that anything is possible.
