Don S. Davis: American Character Actor, Artist, and U.S. Army Captain
Early Life and EducationDon S. Davis was born in Aurora, Missouri, USA. He received a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts and Dramatic Arts from Missouri State University in 1965. After completing three years of active duty in the U.S. Army in Korea, he retired as a captain. In 1970, he earned a Master of Arts in Dramatic Arts from Southern Illinois University, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in 1982.
Teaching and Acting Career
After moving to Vancouver, Davis became a lecturer at the University of British Columbia while doing small television roles. In 1987, he left teaching after almost 17 years to focus on acting full-time. His first regular television work was on "MacGyver," starring Richard Dean Anderson. Davis played recurring roles on the show and also served as a stand-in for Dana Elcar.
Television Success
Davis starred in approximately forty television series, including "Twin Peaks," "The X-Files," "The Twilight Zone," "The West Wing," "Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction," "Poltergeist: The Legacy," "Highlander," and "Supernatural." Following his role as Major Briggs in "Twin Peaks," he frequently played military characters.
Film Roles
On the big screen, Davis appeared in supporting roles in films such as "Cliffhanger" with Sylvester Stallone, "Con Air" with Nicolas Cage, "The 6th Day" with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and "A League of Their Own" with Geena Davis.
"Stargate SG-1" and Beyond
In 1997, Davis joined the cast of "Stargate SG-1" as General Hammond, reunited with Richard Dean Anderson. He left the show in 2003 due to health issues but returned for guest appearances in both "Stargate SG-1" and its spin-off "Stargate: Atlantis" until 2007. In 2008, he appeared in the film "Stargate: Continuum."
Personal Life
After divorcing his first wife, Sandy, with whom he had a son named Matthew, Davis married costumer Ruby Fleming in 2003. He was also an accomplished artist, sculptor, and woodcarver, with works displayed in galleries, private collections, and small museums.
Death
Don S. Davis passed away on June 29, 2008, from a massive heart attack in Gibsons, British Columbia, Canada.
