Biography of Dora Bakoyannis
Dora Bakoyannis was born in Athens in 1954. She is the daughter of former Greek Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis. In 1968, after the establishment of the "black colonels" regime in Greece, she and her family were sent into exile in Paris. In 1974, she returned to Greece and married the renowned journalist and businessman Pavlos Bakoyannis, who was tragically killed by the terrorist group "17 November" in 1989.
Dora received her education at the German School in Paris and studied political science at the University of Munich. She continued her studies in political science and public law at the University of Athens.
Achievements as Mayor of Athens
Dora Bakoyannis made significant contributions during her tenure as the Mayor of Athens. Her successful organization of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens is considered one of her major accomplishments. She also played a key role in the implementation of major urban development and infrastructure projects that transformed the face of the Greek capital. Her dedication and leadership earned her the prestigious international award for "Mayor of the Year," surpassing around 550 city leaders from all continents in the international competition.
