Surayud Chulanont: Prime Minister of Thailand

Surayud Chulanont served as the 24th Prime Minister of Thailand from 2006 to 2008. He was the first non-elected Prime Minister since 1992, appointed by the military following a coup.

Early Life and Education

Chulanont was born in Bangkok in 1943 into a military family. He graduated from the Royal Thai Military Academy in 1965 and later received training in the United States.

Military Career

Chulanont served in the Thai army for over three decades. He held various positions, including infantry commander, artillery officer, and commander of special forces units fighting separatists. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a general and the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army.

Political Involvement

In the 1980s, Chulanont served as an aide to Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda. After Tinsulanonda stepped down in 1988, Chulanont returned to military service.

Monastic Life

Upon retiring from the military, Chulanont briefly entered a monastery in northeastern Thailand, a common practice among former military personnel in Thailand.

Appointment as Prime Minister

In November 2003, Chulanont was appointed to the Privy Council, an advisory body to the King. Following the 2006 military coup, the military appointed Chulanont as Prime Minister.

Leadership

Chulanont was known for his honesty and integrity. Despite his military background, he advocated for non-interference of the military in politics.

Chulanont is married to Khunyung Chittrawadi Chulanont.
