Doris Belack was born in New York City to Russian Jewish immigrants, Isaac and Bertha Belack. She began her acting career in 1946 and made her debut in the television series "Tales of Tomorrow."
The Early Years in Television
Belack's breakthrough role came in 1975, when she was cast as Bernice Fish, the wife of Detective Fish (played by Abe Vigoda) in the television series "Barney Miller." She also appeared as Dorothy Spornak (Bea Arthur's sister) in the pilot episode of "The Golden Girls" before the role was recast with Deena Dietrich.
Law & Order Era
From 1990 to 2001, Belack played the iconic role of Judge Margaret Barry in the long-running television series "Law & Order." Her performance earned her critical acclaim and a loyal following.
Later Career and Legacy
Following her time on "Law & Order," Belack continued to act in various television shows and films. She passed away in New York City on October 4, 2011, four months after the death of her husband, Philip Rose, who she had been married to for 65 years.
