Early Life and Education

Doris Schröder-Köpf was born into a working-class family in Bavaria, Germany. Her father was a mechanic and her mother a homemaker. She completed her education and pursued an internship at the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper in the early 1980s.

Journalistic Career

Following her internship, Schröder-Köpf joined the Augsburger Allgemeine as an editor. In 1987, she moved to the Bild newspaper, where she worked as a political correspondent in Bonn. In 1990, she traveled to New York City with her then-boyfriend, a journalist.

Motherhood and Return to Germany

In 1991, Schröder-Köpf gave birth to a daughter in New York. Shortly after, her boyfriend left her, and she returned to Germany. She joined the news magazine Focus in 1992, where she covered domestic politics.

Marriage to Gerhard Schröder

In 1997, Schröder-Köpf married Gerhard Schröder, then the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony. As the First Lady of Germany, she supported various children's and youth projects. In 2004, the couple adopted a three-year-old girl from St. Petersburg, and in 2006, they adopted a son.

Political Career

In 2011, Schröder-Köpf joined the supervisory board of the Karstadt department store chain. From 2013, she served as a member of the Lower Saxon state parliament. In 2015, the Schröders separated, and their divorce was finalized in 2018.

Recent Years

Since 2016, Doris Schröder-Köpf has been in a relationship with Boris Pistorius, the Interior Minister of Lower Saxony.
