Doug Stanhope: The Controversial Comedian
Early Life and Rise to FameDoug Stanhope, born on March 25, 1967, in Worcester, Massachusetts, is an American stand-up comedian known for his acerbic social commentary and cynical portrayal of life. After dropping out of high school, he embarked on a comedy career in Las Vegas in 1990.
Stanhope gained notoriety as "the guy who says whatever he wants" and began selling his bootleg recordings, "ACID Bootleg," at his shows in 1997. In 1998, he released his first official album, "Great White Stanhope." His subsequent albums and constant touring, along with appearances on The Howard Stern Show, propelled him to popularity.
Television and Beyond
In 2001, Stanhope landed a show on Comedy Central and gained recognition in the United Kingdom after winning the Strathmore Press Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2002. He later became the host of the prank show "Invasion of the Hidden Cameras" on Fox and a co-host on Comedy Central's "The Man Show" before its cancellation in 2004.
In 2010, Stanhope appeared on the British satirical news show "Newswipe with Charlie Brooker," where he addressed topics such as fear-mongering by the media and overpopulation. He also made a cameo in an episode of the series "Louie" in 2011.
Controversial Humor
Stanhope's comedy is often provocative, tackling taboo subjects with a raw approach. He targets religion, politics, women, and sensitive issues like terrorism, suicide, and drug use. His libertarian views and advocacy for freedom from government and the legalization of illicit substances have earned him a reputation as a "controversial," "twisted" comedian.
One of Stanhope's key themes is overpopulation and the human urge to procreate, which he considers a major societal problem. He believes that starvation is a direct result of this issue, as people unable to feed their children continue to reproduce.
Personal Life and Podcast
Since around 2005, Stanhope has resided in Bisbee, Arizona, with his girlfriend, Amy Bingaman. In 2014, he launched his podcast, "Doug Stanhope's Podcast," as part of the All Things Comedy network.
Criticism and Recognition
Stanhope has faced criticism for his controversial material, often labeled as offensive. He has been met with walkouts at shows and accused of anti-Semitism at the Edinburgh Festival. However, despite the criticism, he has a devoted fan base who appreciates his irreverent honesty.
Critics have drawn comparisons between Stanhope and the late comedian Bill Hicks, citing their shared style of aggressive social satire. Stanhope has expressed his dislike for these comparisons.
Recordings and Publications
Stanhope's recordings are predominantly from live performances at comedy clubs across America, except for "Oslo: Burning the Bridge to Nowhere," which was recorded in Norway. His album "Morbid Obscenity" was a charity release, recorded during a benefit show in Appleton, Wisconsin, with proceeds going towards a friend's medical expenses.
In 2016, Stanhope published a memoir about his mother, titled "Digging Up Mother: A Love Story," with a foreword by Johnny Depp.
