Douglas Elton Ulman, known professionally as Douglas Fairbanks, was born on May 23, 1883, in Denver, Colorado. His father was a wealthy businessman and lawyer. From a young age, Fairbanks excelled in sports and took an interest in theater. Despite attending Harvard University, he soon pursued his acting ambitions, financed by his own savings.
Theatrical Career and Marriage
In 1902, Fairbanks made his Broadway debut, using the stage name "Douglas Fairbanks." In 1907, he married Anna Beth Sully, a wealthy heiress. They had a son, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., in 1909. However, the couple's financial security was threatened when Sully's company went bankrupt.
Film Breakthrough with Triangle Pictures
In 1915, Fairbanks joined Triangle Pictures and starred in "The Lamb," a film that solidified his status as a romantic comedy hero. Directors like John Emerson and Anita Loos created a series of films tailored to Fairbanks' charming and ironic style.
United Artists and the Golden Age of Hollywood
In 1917, Fairbanks established his own production company, Douglas Fairbanks Film Corporation. He joined forces with Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, and D.W. Griffith to form United Artists in 1919, giving them creative and financial control. Fairbanks also played a key role in establishing the Motion Picture Fund.
Costume Dramas and Iconic Roles
Fairbanks' 1920 film "The Mark of Zorro" was a major success, leading to a string of costume dramas, including "The Three Musketeers," "Robin Hood," "The Thief of Bagdad," and "The Black Pirate." He and Pickford became the first celebrities to immortalize their handprints in cement on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1927.
Later Career and Personal Life
After his silent film career peaked with "The Iron Mask" in 1929, Fairbanks gradually retired from acting. His last film was "The Private Life of Don Juan" in 1934. In 1936, he married Sylvia Ashley and settled in Santa Monica.
