Draupadi Murmu: India's First President from a Tribal Community
Early Life and Political JourneyBorn on June 20, 1958, in Baidaposi village, Odisha, Draupadi Murmu belongs to the Santhal tribe. Her father and grandfather were village heads. After completing her education at Rama Devi Women's University, she worked as a teacher before entering politics. In 1997, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and became a member of the Rairangpur municipal council.
State Ministerial Roles
From 2000 to 2004, Draupadi Murmu held various ministerial positions in the Odisha state government, including Minister of Commerce and Transport, and Minister of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Development. During her tenure, she made significant contributions to her state's development and welfare.
Governor of Jharkhand
In 2015, Murmu was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the state. As Governor, she diligently served her full five-year term. Her tenure was marked by her commitment to social justice and economic progress.
Presidential Election
In 2022, Draupadi Murmu was nominated by the ruling BJP as their candidate for the Presidential election.
