Reign as King of the Picts

Drest VII reigned as King of the Picts from 724 to 726 or 729. He is mentioned in the Annals of Ulster and the Annals of Tigernach as "the father of Drest". The Chronicle of the Picts refers to him as "Drest and Elpin". It is possible that he was related to Nechtan III (either as his nephew, son-in-law, or cousin). Some speculate that Drest VII was the son of Talorgen mac Grostan.

Imprisonment of Nechtan III

In 726, Drest VII imprisoned Nechtan III. This act sparked a revolt led by Alpin I, who overthrew Drest VII.

Rivalry for the Throne

In 728, Alpin I, Angus I, Drest VII, and Nechtan III engaged in a struggle for the Pictish throne. The conflict culminated in a battle in 729, where Drest VII was killed (possibly at Drumderg).
