Early Life and Career
Drew Walter Peterson was born on January 6, 1964, in Villa Park, Illinois. After graduating from Willowbrook High School, he was enlisted in the army. In 1974, he was expelled from College of DuPage. Contemplating his future, Drew relocated to Falls Church, Virginia, where he underwent police training.
Drew Peterson served in the police force for 29 years, beginning his career in Bolingbrook, Illinois, in 1977. A year later, he joined the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad, specializing in combating drug crimes. In 1979, he was awarded the title of "Police Officer of the Year" for his successful work.
Troubles and Controversies
In 1985, Drew's troubles began. He was initially accused of bribery and later dismissed from the Bolingbrook police force for misconduct. While working in the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad, Drew was offered a bribe in the form of drugs by a suspect, which he failed to report to his superiors. An internal investigation was initiated but lacked sufficient evidence, leading to the reversal of Drew Peterson's dismissal.
In 2007, he faced allegations of assaulting a suspect during an interrogation, but these charges were also dismissed due to lack of evidence. Following the mysterious disappearance of his fourth wife in October 2007, Peterson announced his plans for retirement. He resigned in November, receiving a monthly pension of $6,067.
Marriages and Murders
Drew Peterson first met his first wife, Carol Brown, in high school in Villa Park. They got married in 1974 but divorced six years later after Carol discovered Drew's infidelity. In 1982, Drew married Victoria Connolly, but their marriage ended after ten years when he met Kathleen Savio.
On May 3, 1992, Drew and Kathleen tied the knot. Prior to their divorce in 2003, Drew and Kathleen frequently argued, often resulting in police intervention. Over the course of two years, the police were called eighteen times, and each time, Drew's fellow officers covered for him. Shortly after their divorce, on March 1, 2004, Kathleen Savio was found dead in a friend's house. The police officer investigating the case had known Drew since their school years and initially dismissed the possibility of murder. Drew claimed that his ex-wife accidentally drowned while taking a bath.
A few months after divorcing Kathleen Savio, Drew Peterson married Stacy Ann Cales, who was thirty years younger than him. In 2007, Stacy mysteriously disappeared. Drew claimed that she had run away with her lover. Some of his colleagues initially believed him, but their trust was short-lived. Stacy's sister, Cassandra Cales, reported her disappearance to the police, leading to an official investigation that uncovered new details about Kathleen Savio's case.
Capture and Trial
After Drew's arrest, he cynically remarked, "I guess I should have returned those library books." Soon, he began giving interviews to tabloids and appearing on television shows, becoming a central figure in the media. His face seemed to be everywhere on every channel. Later, Pastor Neil Schori, who attended the same church as Stacy Peterson, revealed that she had confessed to him about Drew's involvement in Kathleen Savio's death and even helped him create an alibi. It became clear that Drew had simply eliminated a witness to his heinous crime.
In May 2009, Drew Peterson was arrested and charged with two counts of murder. The state prosecutor of Illinois sought a sixty-year prison sentence for Peterson.
