Biography of Dries Buytaert

Dries Buytaert is a Belgian programmer and developer, best known as the creator of Drupal - one of the most popular content management systems. He was born on November 19, 1978, in Antwerp, Belgium.

Education and Early Career

After completing his school education, Dries enrolled at the University of Antwerp, where he graduated in 2000 with a master's degree in computer science. It was during the same year that he started working on his project, Drupal. Initially, the project was developed as a program for a small student website and did not even have a name. However, after registering a domain name, Dries realized that he had made a silly mistake and named it "drop" instead of "dorp," which means "village" in Dutch. In 2001, Dries moved the development of the project to a separate domain called drupal.org and renamed it to "Drupal."

Development of Drupal

While the initial version of Drupal was mostly developed by Dries himself, over time, volunteers joined the team to contribute code and fix bugs reported by users. Additionally, Drupal utilized open-source code, allowing users to create their own modules and extend its functionality. By the end of 2011, third-party developers had created over 7,000 modules for Drupal. The number of active users of the system exceeded 120,000 worldwide.

Leadership and Recognition

Throughout the following years, Dries served as the head of Drupal and partly led its development. Like many other developers of open-source software, he was given the title of "Benevolent Dictator For Life," a formal leadership role that allows users to fork the project if their desires conflict with the decisions of the system's leadership.

In 2008, Dries obtained a Ph.D. in computer science from Ghent University, which amused internet users accustomed to the notion that computer geniuses rarely even finish high school. Around the same time, he introduced his new project, Mollom, which functions as a spam filter for websites. Currently, Mollom is used on over 59,000 sites.

For his work, Buytaert has received various awards. In 2008, he was named "Young Entrepreneurs of Tech" and was also included in the list of "35 Innovators under 35." Today, Drupal stands as an excellent example of how free and open-source software can thrive and continue to evolve.
