Early Life and Education
Dr. Dritan Abazović was born in 1985 in Ulcinj, Montenegro, to an Albanian family. After completing his primary and secondary schools in Ulcinj, Abazović pursued a Bachelor's degree in Political Science at the University of Sarajevo, where he graduated with honors, receiving both the "Golden Badge" and "Golden Charter". In 2008, he obtained a Master's degree in International Relations from the University of Montenegro's Faculty of Political Science.
In 2019, Abazović defended his doctoral dissertation, titled "Global Politics - Ethical Aspects of Globalization," at the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Sarajevo.
Career in NGOs and Academia
Throughout his career, Abazović has collaborated with non-governmental organizations dedicated to human rights advocacy, Euro-Atlantic integration, and civic activism. He participated in initiatives promoting multiculturalism in post-conflict areas of the former Yugoslavia and attended international programs, conferences, and seminars.
From 2005 to 2007, Abazović served as an assistant at the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Sarajevo. He completed the Peace and Conflict Studies program at the University of Oslo in 2009 and a Professional Development seminar at the same institution. In 2011, he was a State Department Fellow in Washington, D.C., United States.
Political Career
Abazović co-founded the Positive Montenegro political party in 2012, which secured seven seats in parliamentary elections the same year. Abazović himself was elected as a member of parliament. He left the party in 2014 and remained an independent MP until 2015, when he joined the Civic Movement URA (United Reform Action). He soon became the leader of the movement.
In the 2020 parliamentary elections, Abazović led the "Black on White" coalition, which won four seats in parliament. After the elections, Abazović's party formed a coalition with other opposition forces: Zdravko Krivokapić's "For the Future of Montenegro" and Aleksa Bečić's "Peace - Our Nation."
In December 2020, the coalition formed Zdravko Krivokapić's government, in which Abazović was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. On February 4, 2022, Parliament voted to dismiss the Krivokapić government at Abazović's initiative.
Prime Minister of Montenegro
On April 28, 2022, Abazović was elected Prime Minister of Montenegro by Parliament. 45 MPs voted in favor, while 3 voted against.
