Valerii Baranov: Ukrainian Politician and Public Figure
Valerii Baranov was born on April 19, 1957, in Berdiansk, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Ukraine. He graduated from Berdiansk School No. 10 in 1974 and went on to study at the Zhdanov Metallurgical Institute from 1974 to 1979. He graduated with a degree in Machine Building Technology, Metal Cutting Machine Tools and Instruments, and a qualification as a mechanical engineer.
Early Career
In 1980-1981, Baranov worked as an engineer-technologist at the "Yuggidromash" plant. In 1981, he was elected secretary of the Komsomol committee at the Berdiansk Machine Building Technical School. He then served as second, and later first, secretary of the Berdiansk City Committee of the Komsomol from 1981 to 1986. From 1986 to 1988, he worked as deputy head of a workshop at "Yuggidromash."
Political Service
In 1988-1990, Baranov was head of the organizational department of the Berdiansk City Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU). From 1990 to 1991, he served as second secretary of the Berdiansk City Committee of the CPU. In 1991-1998, he worked as general director of the production firm "Avanti" in Berdiansk. From 1998 to 2007, Baranov served as mayor of Berdiansk.
Parliamentary Career
In 2007, Baranov became a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine as part of the Litvin Bloc. From 2007 to 2010, he was deputy head of the parliamentary committee on construction, urban development, housing and utilities, and regional policy. In 2010, he became head of the committee on budget.
Governorship of Zaporizhzhia Oblast
On March 3, 2014, acting President of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov appointed Baranov as the head of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast State Administration. He replaced Oleksandr Peklushenko in this position. On September 22, 2014, Baranov took a leave of absence to participate in snap parliamentary elections and was replaced by first deputy Grigoriy Samaradak. However, Baranov continued to head the oblast's Defense Council. In the October 26 elections, Baranov lost his bid for a seat in parliament and resigned from his position as governor on October 29, 2014.

Baranov is married to Natalia Igorevna (born 1956) and has two daughters, Marina (born 1977) and Olga (born 1998).
