Duncan MacLeod: The Most Famous Immortal
Origins and ImmortalityDuncan MacLeod is a fictional character and one of the central figures in the "Highlander" franchise. He is best known as the protagonist of the television series "Highlander: The Series," and he also appeared in the films "Highlander: Endgame" and "Highlander: The Source."
Born in 1592 near Glenfinnan, Scotland, Duncan was the son of Clan MacLeod's chieftain, Ian MacLeod. However, it was later revealed that Duncan was not Ian's biological son; he had been switched as an infant for the chieftain's stillborn child.
During a clan battle, Duncan discovered his true nature as an immortal. Mortally wounded, he collapsed in front of his father only to rise unharmed. This miraculous event horrified the Clan MacLeod, who banished Duncan as a dark sorcerer.
Exile and Mentorship
In 1622, Duncan attempted to return to his clan but failed when his father was brutally murdered by the Viking warrior Kanwulf the Destroyer. Duncan avenged his father's death but could not permanently kill Kanwulf, not yet knowing that the only way to truly kill an immortal was to behead them.
Three years after his exile, Duncan met Connor MacLeod, another immortal from Clan MacLeod. Connor understood Duncan's plight, having gone through a similar experience in 1536. Connor became Duncan's mentor and, in many ways, a surrogate father.
Global Adventures
Over the years, Duncan traveled to many exotic lands and embarked on perilous adventures. He witnessed the French Renaissance, the horrors of the French Revolution, and fought in major European conflicts. As a soldier, he participated in the Napoleonic Wars, World War I, World War II, and countless smaller engagements.
The Game and Other Trials
From 1992 to 1998, Duncan MacLeod experienced perhaps more adventure than in all of his previous life. By the start of this season, Duncan was returning to "the Game," a global competition among immortals destined to continue "until there shall be only one."
Throughout the series, Duncan confronted shadows from his past, killing old enemies and losing equally long-time friends. Fate dealt Duncan cruel blows, as he lost his beloved Tessa, his immortal friends Darius and Hugh Fitzcairn, his mortal friend Charlie DeSalvo, and countless other acquaintances.
Encounters and Revelations
During the course of the show, Duncan learned of the Watchers, a mysterious order that had observed immortals since time immemorial. He met Methos, the legendary oldest immortal, and even faced off against the demon Ahriman.
In "Highlander: Endgame," Duncan clashed with the immortal Jacob Kell. Kell, who had hated Connor MacLeod for centuries, targeted Duncan by ruthlessly killing those close to him. With the help of his mentor, Duncan eventually defeated Kell.
In "Highlander: The Source," Duncan sought out the mysterious Source, an artifact said to grant unimaginable power and the fulfillment of desires. Along the way, Duncan gained a rare gift: mortality, giving him the chance to father a child. After vanquishing the Keeper of the Source, Duncan and his wife reached their destination, ultimately learning of their unborn child.
