Dainis Ābiķis: A Political and Educational Leader

Early Life and Education

Dainis Ābiķis was born in June 1961 in Riga, Latvia. In 1980, he graduated from the Faculty of Geography at Leningrad State University.

Teaching Career

From 1979 to 1989, Ābiķis worked as a teacher at Riga Secondary School No. 41. During this time, he also became involved in the Latvian national independence movement.

Political Career

Foundation and Parliament

In 1990, Ābiķis was elected to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia, the first parliament of independent Latvia. He was among the deputies who voted to restore Latvia's independence.

Parliamentary Service

Ābiķis has been elected to the Saeima, the Latvian parliament, seven consecutive times, a record in postwar Latvia. He has served on various committees, including those responsible for education, culture, and science. He has also been a member of the commissions for citizenship and inquiries.

Party Affiliations

Ābiķis has been a member of several political parties, including the Popular Party, Latvian Green Party, Latvian National Front, Latvian Way, and Society for Another Politics.
