Early Life and Education
Werner Grissbach was born into a tailor's family. After graduating from school in 1954, he enrolled in the Higher Naval Officer School in Stralsund. He graduated in 1958 and joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SEDG) the following year.
Naval Service
Early Commands and Career ProgressionAfter working as an electrical welder at a shipyard in Wolgast, Grissbach began his naval career with the 6th Flotilla of the Volksmarine. His service in the fleet spanned over two decades, starting with a command of a torpedo boat from 1960 to 1962. He then commanded a missile boat in 1962 and served as navigator and chief of staff of the 1st Boat Division from 1963 to 1965.
In 1965, Grissbach assumed command of the 1st Missile Boat Squadron, a position he held until 1966. He then pursued further education at the Friedrich Engels Military Academy of the National People's Army (NNA).
Senior Commands and Staff Roles
After graduating from the academy, Grissbach commanded the 3rd Missile Boat Division (1969-1970) and the Torpedo Boat Brigade (1970-1971). From 1971 to 1974, he served as commander of the 3rd Missile Torpedo Boat Brigade.
Grissbach's experience culminated in his appointment as chief of staff and deputy commander of the 6th Flotilla from 1974 to 1983. He assumed command of the flotilla in 1983 and held this position until 1987.
Senior Leadership and Retirement
On March 1, 1986, Grissbach was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral. The following year, he served as deputy chief of combat training under the Volksmarine Command. In 1988, he was appointed to the dual role of chief of combat training and deputy commander of the Volksmarine.
