Captain 2nd Rank and Naval Historian

Captain 2nd Rank Alexei Aleksandrovich Monastyrev was a renowned naval historian and marine writer. Born to Alexander Nikolaevich and Mar'ya Andreevna Monastyrev, his father was a barrister while his grandfather, Nikolai, was a priest. His brother, Sokrat Monastyrev, made an extraordinary flight from Moscow to Baku in 1922 aboard the "Ilya Muromets" aircraft.

Early Life and Education

Monastyrev enrolled in the Naval Cadet Corps in 1906, graduating as a midshipman. He pursued higher education at Moscow University in 1909 and became a midshipman in the fleet in 1908. In 1914, he completed the officer's class for submarine navigation.

Naval Career

Monastyrev served aboard various vessels, including the minelayer "Velikiy Knyaz Alexey" and the destroyer "Zharkiy." In 1915, he was appointed minelaying officer on the submarine "Krab." He subsequently rose through the ranks, becoming senior officer on the submarines "Kashalot" and "Burevestnik."

World War I and Revolutionary Period

From September 1917, Monastyrev commanded the submarine "Skat." He served in the Armed Forces of South Russia and the Russian Army until the evacuation of Crimea. In April 1919, he joined the submarine "Tyulen" as a mine officer and became the commander of "Uatka" in May 1919.

Russian Squadron in Bizerte

After the October Revolution, Monastyrev joined the Russian Squadron in Bizerte, Tunisia, in 1921. He commanded submarine AG-22 from March 1921 and "Uatka" from 1921 to July 1922. From October to December 1922, he headed the submarine division.

Literary Contributions

Monastyrev penned several significant naval publications. He founded and edited the "Bizerte Maritime Collection" from 1921 to 1923. His books included "In the Black Sea 1912-1920," "On Service to the Imperial Fleet," and "History of the Russian Navy."

Personal Life

Alexei Monastyrev's wife, Lyudmila Sergeyevna (née Yenisherlova), was a physician serving in the Russian Navy. She was awarded the George Cross and a gold cigarette case. The couple had no children.

Legacy
