Abner Doubleday
Abner Doubleday was an American general who is often erroneously credited with inventing baseball. However, it has since been established that he did not invent the game but rather codified its rules and organized it as a competitive sport.
Military Career
Doubleday's true fame lies in his military accomplishments. After graduating from West Point in 1842, he fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1860, he was assigned as the commander of Fort Sumter in South Carolina. On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces bombarded the fort, and Doubleday ordered its response fire. These shots marked the beginning of the American Civil War.
Promoted to brigadier general, Doubleday and his division distinguished themselves in several battles. His finest moment came at the Battle of Gettysburg. Following the death of General John Reynolds, Doubleday assumed command of the First Corps and held off superior Confederate forces for seven hours.
Later Life and Legacy
Doubleday retired from military service as a major general in 1873. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Despite his erroneous association with the invention of baseball, Doubleday remains a significant figure in American history for his military achievements.
