Her father, Stanley, was a star at the University of Houston, winning the NCAA 100-meter title in 1982 and the 1980 Olympic Trials. Her mother, DeLisa Walton, was an NCAA 800-meter champion in 1983 for Tennessee State University and competed in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Floyd began running at a young age, inspired by her parents' athleticism. She attended Hastings High School and later the University of Houston, following in her father's footsteps. She emerged on the national scene in 2006, winning the C-USA Outdoor 100-meter title and claiming gold at the California Collegiate Championships.
